February is Indigenous Storytelling Month in Saskatchewan—a month to celebrate and learn alongside Indigenous Storytellers. Indigenous Storytelling Month was established in 2004 by the Library Services for Saskatchewan Aboriginal Peoples (LSSAP) committee, with the goals of supporting oral storytelling, celebrating Indigenous history, language, and culture, and creating a living oral storytelling collection.
Indigenous peoples have traditionally passed knowledge across generations through oral traditions such as storytelling, in the winter. These oral traditions are seen as paramount to learning and relationship-building. Sharing in these oral traditions not only promotes the passing of information but also helps to re-establish traditions that were stolen from Indigenous people through colonization and forced assimilation.
