August 9th marks International Day of the World’s Indigenous Peoples. Across 90 countries around the world, there are approximately 476 million Indigenous people. In Canada, and elsewhere, there exists a significant variety of Indigenous practices, languages, and cultures.

Different groups of Indigenous Peoples around the world often face similar barriers and challenges, fighting for recognition of their lands, traditions, identities, and languages. Indigenous Peoples around the world have historically faced widespread discrimination and assimilation efforts by dominant cultures. Climate and land disputes also act as a threat to some Indigenous cultures.

The International Day of the World’s Indigenous Peoples serves as a day to celebrate Indigenous cultures, knowledges, and languages. August 9th also serves as a day to raise awareness about the challenges Indigenous Peoples face around the world.

On August 9th, and year-round, you can show support for the world’s Indigenous Peoples through spending time engaging with Indigenous communities and cultures local to you, learning about Indigenous histories and rights, and advocating alongside Indigenous Peoples.
